The Importance of SPF

The Importance of SPF

Do you need to wear SPF 365 days a year?

Absolutely! We all need to be using Broad Spectrum SPF in our daily skincare routine, not just on our summer holidays and here is exactly why…

SPF works to protect our skin from invisible damage caused by UVA and UVB rays which are constantly being emitted and penetrating our skin. Whether you are walking the dog, on the beach, working from home and even on the cloudiest of days. This is known as ultraviolet radiation and it can even penetrate through windows causing damage to our skin which can lead to things like pigmentation, uneven skin tone, early signs of ageing and even skin cancer.

Ultraviolet Radiation comes in two forms:

UVA and UVB.

UVA rays penetrate our skin down to the dermal layer causing damage to important proteins like collagen and elastin which leads to signs of ageing, such as lines and wrinkles and causes long-term damage to the skin. This radiation is found all year round no matter the weather conditions, location, or time of day.

UVB rays however can vary on intensity depending on season or location. These rays damage the top layers of our skin resulting in burning. A good way to differentiate the two is to think of UVA rays as Ageing the skin and UVB rays as Burning the skin. Both UVA and UVB contribute to causing skin cancer, which is why it is important you use a sunscreen that protects against both and wear it every single day!

So, what exactly is SPF?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. SPF products protect our skin from UVB radiation, but not always UVA radiation. So, when shopping for your SPF you need to look for products labelled ‘broad-spectrum’ protection as this helps protect the skin against both UVA and UVB radiation.

The higher the factor of SPF the more protection against UVB radiation. However, any higher than SPF50 has not been proven to be any more protective for the skin than an SPF50 alone. Generally, it is understood that SPF30 shields you from 97% radiation where as SPF50 shields you from 98% therefore we recommend using a SPF 30 or 50 in your daily skincare routine to ensure your protecting your skin as much as you possibly can.

UncompliKated SPF 50 Soft Focus Makeup Setting Spray is a broad-spectrum SPF 50, providing your skin with protection against both UVA and UVB radiation.
